Gilt Mirrors
There are a huge number of gilt mirrors on the market but the differentiator between a good and a poor gilt mirror is the detail of the gilt. Pronounced carvings tend to signify a quality gilt mirror as they lend more panache and drama to the design of the gilt frame, shallow carvings are widely available on cheaper gilt frames, the carvings should have great depth and clear definition.
Gilt mirror carvings can sometimes be designed with a theme though the more generic design tends to be considered the preferred option by interior designers. The material used for a gilt mirror will tend to play a large part in the quality of a gilt mirror, the cheaper end of the market tends to make it’s carvings from a poly resin mould, the quality end of the market create gilt mirrors from solid wood. it is very important that a gilt mirror have a solid wooden back, without it the extremely heavy glass inside the gilt mirror will likely put too much stress on the back causing it to come apart, plastic backs on large Gilt Mirrors should be treated with severe caution for this reason.
